Pershing in a fez sets this glass negative apart from the many formal portraits of General John J. Pershing in uniform. The title is taken from notes the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and the record lists it as unverified, so the occasion remains uncertain. The company, based in Washington, D.C., made many news and portrait photographs in the 1910s and 1920s, when Pershing was a national figure after leading American forces in World War I. The fez, a brimless felt cap long associated with Ottoman and North African dress, gives the picture its unexpected, informal look. The collection came to the Library of Congress as a gift in 1947.
