Two of the best-known commanders of the First World War appear together in this glass negative: French Marshal Joseph Joffre and General John J. Pershing, who led the American Expeditionary Forces. The title and April 20, 1922 date come from notes the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, so they remain unverified. Pictures of the two men together recall the wartime alliance they helped forge on the Western Front, now seen from the postwar years. Streaks and other blemishes on the glass reflect natural deterioration of the original coating.
