A trio of men named Neville, Hughes, and Summerall were photographed on October 30, 1929, the day after the stock market crash that opened the Great Depression. The title comes from data the National Photo Company wrote on the negative sleeve and is unverified, so the names and the occasion remain uncertain. The Washington, D.C., studio made many portraits and news pictures in this period, and Herbert A. French donated this glass negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Look for streaks and blemishes, which reflect the natural deterioration of the original coatings on the glass.
