A glass negative titled "Hughes & wife," dated March 1, 1924, shows a couple whose names come from notes the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, details the Library of Congress has not verified. The National Photo Company was a commercial firm in Washington, D.C., whose photographers recorded portraits, events and street scenes across the city in the early decades of the twentieth century. This plate, a gift of Herbert A. French in 1947, may show streaks and blemishes that develop as the original coating deteriorates over time.
