A French diplomat, Andre de Laboulaye, and his wife are named in this portrait, though the record marks the identification as unverified. The glass negative dates to about 1923, when the National Photo Company was making portraits of officials, diplomats and their families in Washington, D.C. Streaks and speckling from the aging of the original coating are visible across the plate, a reminder of how fragile these early negatives are. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
