The only identifying detail for this negative is its title, "Hughes," which the National Photo Company wrote on the glass or its sleeve and which has not been verified. The date of about 1923 is an estimate drawn from neighboring negatives in the same range. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm active in the early twentieth century, produced large numbers of glass plates of public events, buildings and everyday scenes, and this one reached the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. Streaks and blemishes from deteriorating coatings are common on plates of this age and are worth noticing.
