Taken on July 4, 1923, this glass negative shows a horse pulling a wagon along a street, a sight that was still common in American towns of the period, when horse-drawn hauling and delivery remained part of daily city life. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that worked largely in Washington, D.C., made many street and everyday views like this one in the early twentieth century. The title was devised by staff rather than the photographer, so the scene is described only in general terms. The glass also shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating, which is typical of plates of this age.
