Set on 16th Street in Washington, D.C., the Scottish Rite Temple served as a headquarters for the Southern Jurisdiction of Freemasonry's Scottish Rite, and its classical design by architect John Russell Pope made it one of the city's notable fraternal buildings. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital in the early twentieth century, made this view on a glass negative dated to around 1923. The record notes streaks and blemishes from deterioration of the original coatings, a common trait of glass plates of this age that can still reveal the texture of the original exposure.
