A June 6, 1923, glass negative shows a sitter identified as James S. McCandless, though that name comes from unverified data written on the negative or its sleeve. It belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, the work of a Washington, D.C., studio that recorded city life and public events in the early twentieth century. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Natural deterioration of the original coatings has left streaks and other blemishes across the glass, which affect how the image looks today.
