A horse chestnut at Fredericksburg, Virginia, is the subject, and its record credits George Washington with planting it, though that claim is unverified. Washington spent much of his boyhood across the Rappahannock River at Ferry Farm, so the local link is plausible. The National Photo Company made many views of American historic sites in the 1920s, and this October 1925 glass negative still shows streaks from the deterioration of its original coatings.
