Few houses in Virginia tie so directly to the Revolutionary era as Kenmore, the Georgian mansion in Fredericksburg built for Fielding Lewis and his wife, Betty Washington Lewis, George Washington's sister. This glass negative records a dedication held at the house on May 9, 1925, a period when the old residence was drawing renewed public attention. The National Photo Company, which produced many views of American towns, landmarks and civic events in the early twentieth century, made pictures like this for wide circulation. Look closely and you will see streaks and blemishes across the plate, the result of natural deterioration in the original coatings on the glass.
