The dedication of the National Academy of Sciences and its National Research Council, held on April 28, 1924, is the event this glass negative records. The Research Council had been founded in 1916 at the request of President Woodrow Wilson to coordinate scientific work for the nation, and the building marked its growing role in Washington. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital's public life in the early twentieth century, made the negative. Visitors may notice streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from the natural breakdown of its original coating.
