Swimmers D.C. Crain and Clarence Ross are named in this glass negative from the first national long-distance swimming race, held on August 22, 1925. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. studio that documented the city's news, sports and everyday life in the early twentieth century, made the plate, which Herbert A. French gave to the Library of Congress in 1947. Long-distance swimming was a popular spectator sport in the 1920s, and events like this drew crowds to watch athletes test their endurance. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of its original coating, a common sign of plates of this age.
