Taken at Arlington National Cemetery on June 12, 1927, this scene places Charles Lindbergh at the nation's best-known military burial ground only about three weeks after his solo flight across the Atlantic. His Washington visit that month drew large crowds and official honors, and the cemetery stop reflected the national attention that followed his landing near Paris. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the capital's public life in the early twentieth century, and the glass negative shows the streaks and blemishes typical of aging coatings.
