Charles Lindbergh is the subject of this 1927 glass negative, made at the Washington Navy Yard on June 11, a few weeks after his solo transatlantic flight from New York to Paris in May. That flight made him an international celebrity, and his visit to the capital included a ceremony at the Navy Yard where he received the Distinguished Flying Cross. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio active from about 1910 to 1936, recorded many such public events, and its plates capture the crowds and official attention that followed the flight. Visible streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural breakdown of its original coating.
