Mare Island Navy Yard, on the Napa River near Vallejo, California, was one of the first naval facilities on the Pacific coast, established in 1854 and long a center for building and repairing warships. This view comes from a glass negative made by the National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed American landmarks and industry in the early 1900s. The record dates it roughly between 1908 and 1919, and the negative was given to the Library of Congress by Herbert A. French in 1947. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural breakdown of its original coating.
