A glass negative of Samuel M. Shortridge, a Republican who took his seat in the United States Senate from California in 1921, dates from about the start of his first term. The National Photo Company, based in Washington, D.C., made portraits like this for newspapers and magazines covering national politics, and its collection documents the capital in the early twentieth century. Viewers will notice streaks and blemishes across the plate, the result of natural deterioration in the original coating. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
