The record gives this glass negative the title "Frederick of Cal.," though that label is unverified and its subject is not identified. The date of 1923 is an estimate based on negatives in the same range. The National Photo Company, based in Washington, D.C., made a large body of early twentieth-century pictures of the capital and its people, and this negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coatings, which is worth keeping in mind when judging the image.
