Canoe tilting, staged at the Moose Field Day at Arlington Beach on August 22, 1925, shows a lighthearted contest of balance and nerve. In this sport, two paddlers in narrow canoes approach each other and try to knock the opponent into the water with long poles, a form of jousting adapted to the water. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented local events and everyday life in the early twentieth century, made the picture as part of its large body of negatives. The glass plate shows the streaks and blemishes typical of aging coatings, which give the scene a faint, weathered softness.
