Taken on May 30, 1924, this glass negative records the Memorial Day observance at Arlington National Cemetery. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the capital in the early twentieth century, made the image, though the title on its sleeve is unverified and part of the original caption has rubbed away. Memorial Day grew out of Decoration Day, the custom of placing flowers on soldiers' graves, and Arlington became a central place for that ritual. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of its original coating, which can soften some fine detail.
