Calvin Coolidge appears at Arlington National Cemetery, the burial ground across the Potomac from Washington that had become a site of national ceremony by the 1920s. Coolidge served as president from 1923 to 1929, and his appearances there linked the office to the nation's war dead. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio whose glass negatives document the city and its public life in the early twentieth century. Viewers should note the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which result from age and deterioration of the original coating rather than from the scene itself.
