Calvin Coolidge is the subject of this picture, shown at Arlington National Cemetery in late May 1924, just before Memorial Day, when officials often visited the cemetery to honor the war dead. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio known for documenting the capital's public life in the 1910s and 1920s, made the negative on a glass plate. Streaks and blemishes across the surface come from the deterioration of the original coatings, not from the scene itself. The title and date come from notes tied to the company's records and are not fully verified.
