Calvin Coolidge, president at the time, is the subject of this glass negative, taken at Arlington National Cemetery across the Potomac from Washington on May 25, 1924. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed the capital and its visitors in the early twentieth century, made the exposure on a large glass plate, a format that recorded fine detail. The coating has deteriorated over the decades, so the negative shows streaks and blemishes that are part of its physical history. Herbert A. French gave it to the Library of Congress in 1947.
