This glass negative records an Army band marching in the Defense Day parade on September 12, 1924, an observance meant to focus public attention on national preparedness in the years after World War I. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio active from about 1907 to 1932, produced a large body of street and event views like this one, documenting civic life in the capital. Herbert A. French donated the plate in 1947, and its streaks and blemishes come from natural deterioration of the original coatings, which are visible traces of its age.
