Few Washington buildings of the 1920s were as closely tied to science as the headquarters of the National Academy of Sciences and its National Research Council, and this glass negative records the building's dedication on April 28, 1924. The Research Council was founded in 1916, at the request of President Woodrow Wilson, to coordinate scientific work during the First World War, and it remained active afterward. The National Photo Company, which documented the capital's public life in the early twentieth century, made the picture, and a closely related negative is kept with it. The glass may show streaks and other blemishes from deterioration in the original coatings.
