Taken on April 28, 1924, this glass negative records the dedication of the National Academy of Sciences and National Research Council headquarters on Constitution Avenue in Washington, D.C. The building was largely financed by a gift from the Carnegie Corporation and gave the scientific body a permanent home after decades of meeting in rented or borrowed space. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio, made the picture, and Herbert A. French's gift in 1947 brought the negative to the Library of Congress. Streaks and blemishes across the glass come from deterioration of its original coatings.
