Dedication ceremonies for the National Academy of Sciences' Research Council building in Washington took place on April 28, 1924, and this glass negative documents that day. The National Research Council had been organized in 1916, during the First World War, to bring scientists, industry and government together on research problems, and the building gave that work a permanent home. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio active from about 1906 to 1936, recorded much of the city's public life, which makes the picture a useful record of the occasion. The glass may show streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of its original coatings, which is worth keeping in mind when judging fine detail.
