A short stretch of Executive Avenue in Washington, D.C., anchors this view, with carriages and coaches still sharing the street in the years just after World War I. The glass negative dates from roughly 1918 to 1920 and belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, a body of work by a commercial studio that recorded the capital's streets, buildings and daily life in the early twentieth century. Streaks and other blemishes on the glass come from the natural deterioration of its original coatings, and they still show through the image. Herbert A. French donated the negative in 1947.
