Washington's Patent Office building is the subject here, a structure that had already housed the nation's patent work for generations by the time this negative was made. Architect Robert Mills designed the Greek Revival building, and construction began in 1836. Its unfinished halls were turned into a hospital during the Civil War. The glass negative, made between about 1918 and 1920 by the National Photo Company, shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of its original coating, which is worth keeping in mind when judging its fine detail.
