A rustic footbridge crossing the water at Cabin John, in Montgomery County, Maryland, sets this view apart from the many scenic pictures the National Photo Company made of the Washington area. The company was a commercial studio active in the early twentieth century, and its views were widely used for postcards and illustrated publications. Rustic work, built from rough logs and branches, was a popular style in parks and private grounds of the period, so the bridge reflects a taste for structures that blended into their wooded surroundings. The glass negative shows streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating, which are worth noticing when studying the image.
