Barney and John Smith are the named subjects of this glass negative, dated October 13, 1923, though that title and date came from the National Photo Company's own notes and have not been independently verified. The company worked in Washington, D.C., during the 1920s and 1930s, producing a large body of portraits, street scenes and events that now belongs to the Library of Congress. Glass plates of this size were a common format for studio and press photography of the period, and Herbert A. French gave this negative to the library in 1947. Streaks and blemishes on the surface come from natural deterioration of the original coating, so the image may look uneven in places.
