Identified in its record only as John Loehler at GW, this 1920 glass negative most likely connects to George Washington University in Washington, D.C., with the initials pointing to that campus. The National Photo Company, which worked in the capital in the early twentieth century, made large numbers of such negatives documenting people, buildings and daily life. This example came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947, and its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of the original coating, a reminder of how fragile these plates can be.
