A tightly cropped close-up of a man identified as Mark Jackson, dated 1920, is set apart by its framing, which places the sitter's face at the center. It is a glass negative from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio whose early twentieth-century commercial work recorded people, streets and events in the capital. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. The streaks and blemishes visible on the glass come from the natural deterioration of its original coating, not from the scene itself.
