Here Amelia Rosser poses in the role of Ireland, the allegorical figure that artists and pageant organizers long used to stand for the nation. Dressing a sitter as a national personification was a common practice in the early twentieth century, when costume tableaux raised money for causes and celebrated heritage. The image survives as a glass negative from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio whose work from the 1910s and 1920s is held by the Library of Congress. The title comes from unverified studio notes, and the plate shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of its original coating.
