A portrait of Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer survives here as a glass negative, the original from which prints were made. Palmer led the Justice Department from 1919 to 1921, and his name became linked with the Palmer Raids, the roundups of suspected radicals and labor activists that began in late 1919 and continued into 1920. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented political figures and public events, supplied portraits like this one to newspapers and agencies. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coating, a common condition in negatives of this age.
