A. Mitchell Palmer, the Attorney General, is shown on the golf course at the Chevy Chase Club, a private club in the Washington, D.C., area where Washington officials often played. The record notes that Palmer was an avid golfer who had little time to spend on the links, which makes this 1920 image of him at play a small glimpse of a busy cabinet officer's leisure. Palmer was serving as Attorney General under President Woodrow Wilson at the time, and he was known in 1920 for leading the federal raids against suspected radicals. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio whose glass negatives record much of the capital's public life in the early twentieth century.
