Two women active in party politics appear in this picture: Mrs. Arthur Livermore, chairman of the New York State Women's Republican Executive Committee, and Mrs. Antoinette Funk of the Women's National Democratic Executive Committee. Both were delegates to a national conference of community organizations in Washington, D.C. The caption dates the meeting to March 1920, a few months before the Nineteenth Amendment was ratified in August, when women's party committees were organizing to take part in voting. Seeing a Republican and a Democrat together at one civic gathering shows how women's political work was beginning to cross party lines.
