Here we have a woman who ran a Red Cross cafeteria in Washington, D.C., during the years just after the First World War, when the American Red Cross was still running canteens and service rooms for soldiers and sailors passing through the capital. The negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city's government offices, institutions and daily life in the early twentieth century. Its glass plates were often captioned loosely, so the name "Mrs. Clears" is recorded as the studio gave it and has not been independently confirmed. Faint streaks and blemishes across the glass are signs of the coating breaking down over time.
