Little is recorded about the sitter beyond the name the National Photo Company wrote on the negative sleeve, Mrs. Genevieve Allen, and that name has not been independently verified. The negative dates to about 1920, when the Washington, D.C., studio was producing large numbers of portraits, street scenes, and views of public events for clients and publications. The glass plate is small, four by five inches or smaller, and like many plates of its age it shows streaks and blemishes where the original coatings have deteriorated. The Library of Congress received the set as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
