Rear Admiral Leigh C. Palmer is the subject of this glass negative, a small 4 by 5 inch plate from the National Photo Company Collection. The Washington-based firm was one of the most prolific commercial studios of the early twentieth century, documenting government officials, military officers, and public events in the nation's capital. Palmer's name on the negative comes from the company's own notes, which the Library of Congress lists as unverified, so the identification is worth treating as a working attribution. Like many plates of this age, the emulsion shows streaks and surface blemishes caused by the natural breakdown of its coatings, which adds to its value as a physical record of the process.
