This glass negative records Rear Admiral William R. Shoemaker, with the date May 24, 1924, written on it. The title comes from data the National Photo Company added to the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified. The Washington, D.C., studio made many portraits and documentary views of officials, officers and public events in the early twentieth century, and Herbert A. French gave its negatives to the Library of Congress in 1947. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes, which come from the natural deterioration of the glass's original coatings.
