Vice Admiral Philip Andrews appears in this portrait dated May 29, 1923, preserved on a 4-by-5-inch glass plate. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio active in the early twentieth century, made many portraits of government and military figures, and its negatives were often labeled with the sitter's name and date. Glass plates like this one were the standard working medium for commercial studios before flexible film became common, and they are prone to streaks and coating loss over time. The identification rests on the studio's own caption, which has not been independently verified. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
