Herbert J. Drane, a Florida congressman, is shown here in an office that seems to double as a sponge exhibit, with walls covered in sponges of every size and variety. The caption ties him to Tarpon Springs, a Gulf Coast town that was then one of the country's major sponge markets, and the photograph shows him holding some of his favorite specimens. Sponge harvesting and trade were central to the local economy of that region in the early twentieth century, which makes the setting more than a novelty. The picture was made in 1920 by the National Photo Company, a Washington studio whose glass negatives record much of the capital's public life of that era.
