Former Missouri governor Joseph W. Folk appears on the left of this group, one of several lawyers photographed in court in February 1920. The picture records a hearing in a suit William Randolph Hearst brought to delay the sale of German merchant ships seized during the First World War. Folk, who built a reputation as a reform governor fighting corruption in Missouri, stands beside Hearst's general counsel, Mr. DeFord, General Ansell, and Col. Bailey. The glass negative was made by the National Photo Company, a Washington news photography firm, and its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of the original coating.
