Governor Charles R. Mabey of Utah sits for this portrait, one of the glass negatives the National Photo Company made in Washington during the early 1920s. Mabey served as Utah's governor from 1921 to 1925, and a studio portrait like this one was a common way for a state executive to supply an image for newspapers and official use. The National Photo Company was a busy commercial studio that photographed politicians, officials and visitors to the capital, and its negatives now form one of the Library of Congress's major holdings of the period. Notice the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from the slow deterioration of its original coating.
