Gov. William Cameron Sproul, who led Pennsylvania from 1919 to 1923, is the subject of this glass negative, one of many portraits the National Photo Company made of public figures in Washington and across the country in the early 1920s. The company, which operated from about 1908 to the early 1930s, produced large numbers of press and studio images that newspapers and magazines could reproduce quickly. Its glass plates were often sold or donated in batches, and collectors and archivists later preserved them as a record of the era's political life. The negative's streaks and blemishes are typical of aging emulsion, so the image is best appreciated as a document of the period rather than a crisp modern portrait.
