Warren G. Harding, in the second year of his presidency, is the subject of this March 28, 1922 view made at Meade Memorial, a church in Washington. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio active in the capital in the early twentieth century, produced thousands of pictures of officials, buildings and public occasions like this one. Its glass negatives were prized for their sharp detail, but many have aged unevenly, and this one shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating.
