Warren G. Harding, who took office as president in March 1921, is shown arriving at what the partial title identifies as an unemployment conference. The country was then in a sharp economic downturn that left many American workers without jobs, and Harding convened a national conference on the problem that autumn. The view comes from a glass negative made by the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded official life in the capital during the 1910s and 1920s. The negative may show streaks and blemishes from deterioration in its original coatings.
