Miss Irene Montgomery, a circus performer, is shown wearing a zebra-lined coat belonging to John R. Agee, a circus manager, which the caption values at $5,000. The 1920 National Photo Company negative records a publicity moment: the caption says she assisted at a community service mass meeting at the Navy Department that day. Such staged pairings of entertainers with notable costume pieces were common in wartime-era press photography, when companies used familiar faces to draw attention to civic causes. The glass plate, now in the Library of Congress, shows the streaks of natural deterioration typical of aging negatives.
