A telephone company employee named only as Miss Sisson is the subject of this 1921 glass negative, which the National Photo Company labeled "C & P Tel." The initials stand for the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company, which provided local service in Washington, D.C., and its surroundings. Commercial studios like the National Photo Company documented the capital's businesses and workers in the early twentieth century, and a portrait tied to a utility shows how telephone service had become part of daily office life. The plate, a 1947 gift of Herbert A. French, shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating, which are worth keeping in mind when viewing the image.
